DIY Office Supplies Updates

Hello everyone!
It's officially back to school season.
I have always had a love for school supplies.
I know that sounds weird but, there's nothing like fresh markers, crisp notebooks, and sharp pencils to me.
I stopped going to school a while ago...
But my love for school supplies has not faltered.
I updated a few items in my office and thought they would be perfect for all of your new school supplies as well. 


Tassel Paperclips


You will need:
Large Paperclips
Yarn
Scissors

Determine the length you want your tassels to be.
I wanted my yarn tassels to be 4 inches long.
Since we are "folding" the yarn in half, you will want to double it.
I cut 8-inch yarn pieces. 
Cut as many pieces of yarn as desired.
The more yarn, the fuller your tassel will be and vice versa.
I did 15 pieces of yarn each.
Line your yarn up end to end evenly.


Place the yarn through the end of the paperclip and "fold" in half.


With another piece of string, tie around all of the yarn near the paperclip to create a tassel.


Trim the ends of the yarn evenly if needed.


Heart Paperclips


You will need:
Metal Paperclips

This one is so easy!
The only thing you need is paperclips and some elbow grease.
Start by holding the paperclip in the center with the long side facing down.


Gently bend the right side of the paperclip up.


Flip the right pointed end of the bent side of the paperclip up to the left-center.



Reshape if needed.
Repeat on the remaining paperclips.


Shaped Post It Notes


You will need:
Post It Notes
Pencil 
Scissors

Freehand (or trace!)  your desired design onto the top Post It Note.
Make sure you are including a good portion of the top of the Post It in your design so that you will keep its stickiness.
I drew a fox, a cactus and a mermaid tail.


Once you have your design drawn, cut out along the lines with your scissors.
I had to break the Post It Note pad into sections as my scissors were not strong enough to cut through an entire stack. 
I broke the pad into stacks of 5 Post It Notes.
You could do this as well or create several different designs with each note pad.
It's up to you!
Once you have all of your Post It Notes cut out, stack them on top of one another to recreate the pad.


Pom-Pom Binder Clips


You will need:
Pom Poms
Binder Clips
Hot Glue Gun
Glue Sticks

Separate the handles of the binder clip.
Add a small dot of glue to one of the handles and immediately add your choice of Pom Pom on top.
Hold in place for ten seconds.
Repeat on the rest of the binder clips.


Washi Tape Binder Clips


You will need:
Washi Tape
Binder Clips
Scissors

Place a piece of washi tape on the base of the binder clip.
Cut off the excess tape. 
Repeat on the opposite side.
Repeat on the rest of the binder clips.


All of these DIY's are so quick and easy to do but add such a fun twist to your ordinary office supplies.
I love the pop of color it added to my desk!

3 Spray Paint Office Upgrades

Hello everyone!
Every year around back to school time I get inspired to work on my office.
This year I wanted to update a few pieces and make them my own.


The first piece was this Ikea Cube Shelf.


I swear everyone and their dog has one.
That didn't stop me from wanting my own but I did want to add something to it.
I soon realized that the spot in my office I had set aside for this piece is where the vent was located on the floor.
With a south facing room I NEED my air conditioning. 
So, I thought why not add some legs to it?
I bought these legs from Home Depot.
I didn't want the tips on the end and actually wanted them to be just a tad shorter.
I knew that if we cut off the tips I would have the look I wanted so we purchased them. 
Erik removed the tips with a band saw and I sanded down the rough edges.
Then I applied a few coats of gold spray paint.
We added Top Plates to the four corners of the bottom of the shelf and screwed the legs in.


Bada bing! Bada boom!


The next pieces are these file boxes.
I got these from Target a few years ago and love them.


They are perfect for keeping my important documents safe, easy to reach and organized.
When I originally bought them I had a different vision for my office.
The color is so universal that they would have still worked in my new office but I wanted to add some color.
I taped off the small details I didn't want to paint over and gave the file boxes a few coats of navy spray paint.


And just like that they went from drab to fab!


The final piece was this Ikea desk I have had for a few years.


After getting a new vision for my office I new I wanted to upgrade this simple desk.
I easily removed the top of the desk from the legs and gave the legs a good spray paint of gold.


And just like that it looks like a new piece!
Super simple, quick and easy.



I am so excited that my little space is slowly coming together.
I can't wait to share more of my ideas as they come to life.

Makeover Monday | Christmas Cork Board Design

Hello everyone!
Happy Monday!
As you know I love to update the cork boards in my office to match the current season or holiday.
Today I am going to show you how I updated them for Christmas!


I spend a lot of time in my office during the holiday season.
It is Santa's workshop so I wanted to make sure my cork boards were festive.
You know I have been loving the more natural color scheme and it made its way over to my cork boards as well!

I kept the fairy lights draped over the cork boards and they added the perfect amount of Christmas magic.
I love having them on while I wrap presents in my workshop.

Makeover Monday | Erik Office Design Part 2

Hello everyone!
Happy Monday!
I hope you all had an amazing holiday weekend.
Today I will be going over the final design for Erik's office.
This is for the wall to the right of our last concept design.


This wall is painted a dark gray as well.
Against the wall Erik has two large black bookcases.
Here his massive game system collection is displayed.
Every shelf holds a different game system and to the side of the game system is a stack of games that go with it.
In between the bookcases he has his TV.
Currently the TV sits on a dinky little shelf.
I would like to get a more sturdy bookcase and get the TV mounted above it.
I really liked the look of the this bookcase and love how it is separated for storage.
On it we will store the game systems he is currently playing along with his TV series collection.
Erik has so much gaming equipment.
I think this is a great way to display it without it looking too cluttered.

Makeover Monday | Erik Office Design Part 1

Hello everyone!
For today's Makeover Monday I will be going over the first concept design for Erik's Office.
This is Erik's room so I have given him full creative control but I wanted to show you what he has shared with me.
This concept design covers the wall to the left as you enter the room and the wall to it's right.


As I mentioned in my previous post, Erik and I settled on a gray office with black furniture.
The walls in Erik's office have already been painted a dark gray.
Erik specifically chose this black desk because of the pull out panel.
It fits under the desk when not in use and is the perfect temporary desk for when a friend brings their computer over.
Since the desk doesn't offer a lot of storage I suggested adding two shelves slightly above the desk to create room.
This gives storage for his computer games, headphones, controllers and at my request his degree.
I will make him show that (soon to be two) off.
On his desk he has his desktop, keyboard and mouse. 
Behind the desk his black leather desk chair. 
Directly in front of the desk Erik wants to place a black leather love seat.
Both the love seat and his desk will face the TV.
The love seat will be the seating area for when they are playing his game systems on the TV.
Above the front of the desk and the love seat is the window.
We chose a gray black out shade for coverage.
The shade fits the modern feel of the room and will create a dark atmosphere even during the day.

Makeover Monday | Office Inspiration

Hello everyone!
Happy Halloween Eve!
The only room left to cover upstairs is Erik's Office.
The overall design of his office will be up to him but I wanted to give you an idea of what he has shared with me and what we have agreed upon.
Right before we purchased our house we bought Erik a new desk. 
He always had envisioned a black desk so a black desk we got.
Since he was going with black furniture I suggested gray walls.
Gray is Erik's favorite color and at the time gray walls had just started becoming popular.
He agreed.

When we bought our house one of the upstairs rooms just happened to be painted a darker gray.
It automatically became Erik's office.
Erik is a huge gamer.
He has several different gaming systems and the games and controllers for each.
I suggested tall bookcases to help display all of his treasures.

I think the dark walls and dark furniture are perfect for his man cave.
If there is one thing I have learned it is that Erik likes it dark when playing games.
The deep color scheme will help keep the room dark and cool.

Makeover Monday | Fall Cork Board Design

Hello everyone!
We have been slowly transitioning to fall over here. 
I love to decorate the cork boards above my desk for the different seasons or holidays.
Over the weekend I decorated for fall.


This is such a quick and easy way to decorate my office for any occasion.
I collect pictures, watercolors and quotes from Pinterest.
Then I print them with Costco.
It usually costs around $10.

I added some twinkle lights around the cork boards for a little more magic.
It really did set the tone for fall in my office.
I light my fall candle and let the spirit of fall take over.

Makeover Monday | Office Design Part 3

Hello everyone!
I hope you are all having an amazing Labor Day.
For today's Makeover Monday we will be going over the final concept design for my office.
This is for the wall to the right of the last design post. 


I have always wanted to have a couch in my office.
It's perfect for when I need to take a break from sitting or have company over.
Velvet has made a big comeback and I love the look of a navy velvet couch.
I thought my office would be the perfect place to add this statement piece. 
To the left of the couch we have a gold lamp to add some light. 
Above the couch I wanted something to fill in the space so it wouldn't feel so open.
I looked and looked but couldn't find any artwork that I felt fit the theme of the room.
I found these printables and thought that they would be perfect to take up the space above the couch.
They are simple so I placed them in gold frames to match the other gold accents in the room
I love that the font keeps it classy but the phrase "good vibes" feels more like my personality.
To add in some color I added blush pink, black and white spotted and gold throw pillows on top of the couch.
The office feels classy and playful.
It's the perfect balance to get my creative juices flowing.

Makeover Monday | Office Design Part 2

Hello everyone!
For today's Makeover Monday I am going to go over the second concept design for my office.
This is for the wall located to the right of the last concept design. 


This is where the window is located which didn't leave us with a lot of options.
This eight cube organizer is the perfect size for under the window and adds much needed storage space.
The bottom shelves hold larger organizational items. 
Magazine holders, file boxes and a drawer set.
Above we have decorative items.
Peonies in a vase, a gold pencil holder, a pink rock on top of decorative books and a white pineapple Scentsy. 
Behind the organizer long dusty pink curtains hang from a gold curtain rod.
The navy, gold, black and white make the office feel more formal.
While the the pink adds a pop of color and fun to the room.

How I Organize Papers

Hello everyone!
If you did not know I am a very organized person.
My friends love to tease me about how organized I am...
But they also like to ask me how to organize certain things.
One thing I have been asked about repeatedly is how I keep papers organized.
You know things like bills, policies, medical records, etc.
My system?


A new paper comes in.
It will go into a letter tray to be paid or to a file box to be stored.
Once the bills are paid they go to the file box as well.
They will stay in the file box for a year.
Once the year is up they get transferred to a three ring binder.
They stay in the three binder for three years, five years, forever. However long I feel necessary.
Once there time has passed the papers are shredded. 
Pretty easy.

The letter tray is stored on my desk.
The file boxes on a book shelf.
The binders in the closet.


Each three ring binder is a different color and is assigned a specific topic.
Red for Medical. Bills, health insurance.
Orange for our Cable Provider. Bills, our contract, contact information.
Yellow for Scout. Mainly his medical records.
Green for Finances. Bank statements.
Blue for School. Erik's transcripts, student loans.
Purple for Automobiles. Insurance, registration, payments.
Pink for our Phone Provider. Bills, contract.
Black for Retirement. Statements, terms.

Hopefully this gives you your own ideas for organization.
Right now is the perfect time to stock up on office items!
